Aloha and mālō e lelei! My name is McKelly Makahanohano Tausinga and I have Down Syndrome. My father is Tongan, my mother is Hawaiian and I have four siblings. I graduated from Kauri Sue Hamilton School for special needs. I live a very happy life with the help of my loved ones.
I cannot speak or write much and I need help with daily tasks. However, I have a gift of lifting those with broken hearts and bringing peace in moments of division. My passion for music, dancing and making people smile have been my greatest method of communication. It is my mission to make this world a happier and more loving place. I hope my story brings inspiration, but at the very least, I hope it brings a smile to your face.
Mahalo nui and aloha,
McKelly
In 2007, I was rushed to the ER and put on life support. The doctors told my family I had hours to live and they said their goodbyes while I was in a coma. However, to everyone’s astonishment, I woke up a month later. And for 15 years, I have been in and out of the hospital defying the odds.
With the help of my family, I have endured terrible hardships of every kind. I am filled to the brim with gratitude for the extra time I’ve been given. There’s so much goodness I want to pay forward. Every day I have is a valuable gift that I’m happy to share with you all.
‘Ofa lahi atu and aloha!
McKelly
Q: Where in Polynesia are your ancestral roots?
A: Tonga & Hawaii
Q: How has being of Polynesian descent and culture
shaped who you are today?
A: My love for music and dancing definitely comes from my Polynesian upbringing. Since I was a baby, I have partied at Tongan dances regularly. It’s where I love to show off my creative dance moves. The crowds often cheer me on when I hit the dance floor.
Q: What advice do you have for the upcoming
Polynesian generation in preparation for brighter
futures?
A: First, be aware of each other’s needs. Second, go out of your way to help others often. Great happiness comes from bringing happiness to others.
