“Moving away from home was a very big decision. As islanders, we are all very family oriented - and I am very connected to my community and family. Therefore, moving away at 18 to New York City was life changing. Being so far from anything familiar is a big shift. Especially since there are not many pacific islanders, especially Fijians. You really have to find out who you are without those things too. Coming from a low income background, you can feel guilty making decisions for yourself. Yet I know when I come back I will take what I learn from being away to make a difference too. At the end of the day we are all children of the Earth and I find community wherever I go.”

“Being of Fijian/Melanesian descent inspires me because it reminds me to feel connected to nature and spirit. It reminds me to never forget my community, to practice talanoa, and create art. I really admire how pacific islanders story tell, whether through art, dance, or oration. It reminds me that within my own work of anticaptialsm, abolition, and art making I should look to the needs of the earth, spirit, and the people. I am always reminded of my nani, who showed me to be unapologetic and strong. she connected me to mana and faith. If you are looking to do something “selfish” that can better you and your community. do it unapologetically.”
