“For me, I think I have grown my career a lot in the sense that I have got a lot of experience. I learned how to network and put myself out there in uncomfortable positions and meet the people I wanted. A lot of that has come from getting a college education. The fact that I went to college and got my degree helped me impact my future lineage. Even in college, I was involved in clubs, took on leadership positions, did internships, and worked multiple jobs. I think this is what helped me stand out to employers once I graduated from college. I was the first woman in my family to graduate college and work in tech, so navigating this on my own has been equally as challenging and rewarding. My hustle has derived from a continuous urge to learn and improve and constantly evolve into a better version of myself. I think it can be intimidating when we don't see people who look like us taking nontraditional risks. I think it's important to share my story and show anyone watching that it's possible.”
“I want to take this time to acknowledge that geographically Fijians are technically Melanesian. Historically, Polynesians and Melanesians have crossed cultures and share many of the same values and heritages seen and practiced today across Polynesia. Growing up in the Bay Area, I was surrounded heavily by Polynesian presence. Within my community, I learned that Polynesian cultures are very intentional, warm, and inviting. Growing up, I was taught that you are no less than or better than any other person and to always treat everyone with respect. Everything has a purpose, and everything is connected. Just knowing and understanding that has made me an intentional person.
Listen to what it is that YOU truly want to do. You must believe in yourself, even if the route you want to take is non-traditional or has not been done before. It's hard, but it's possible. If you see a bigger picture for yourself, go for it. I think it's important to recognize that everyone has different starting points in life. Still, all you can do is focus on yourself and your goals and work on the change that you want to see for yourself. Figure out where you are starting from, filter out the background noise, and never give up.And most importantly, realize that you will learn something from whatever you do. Once you know that, you understand that there is no such thing as failure, just the thought of giving up. Never give up.”
